Food porn galore!

Happy Saturday and welcome to the latest edition of Food Porn. Today, we have a full agenda, so hang on firmly! We're gonna move fast.

First of all, check out this post over on the Cooking Blog (which I've been ignoring lately). Light, fresh and delicious!

DSC_0012

Now for the food porn from last night.... I know you've been waiting for this. It's the chili encrusted lamb chops with lime and black bean tabbouleh and peach ketchup! So good!

Lamb chops

It has fresh mint in the tabbouleh and I just can't stop eating it!

The chili last night was a lightly spiced chicken Verde which made my half order of nachos look very interesting!

Chicken verde nachos

Finally, we finish our pub fest with an order of steamers and sourdough bread the gentleman on the other side of me ordered.

Steamers

Lastly, I tried one of the new starbucks beverages yesterday, the Vivanno. Their "nourishing blend" breakfast drink. I had the orange, banana, mango.

Vivanno

$3.75 for this. I found that a little spendy considering I can get a much larger smoothie for the same price at Emerald City Smoothie or Jamba Juice. It does have protein powder and whole banana it it. It wasn't too gritty, so it was well blended. Could have used more ice as it warmed up quickly. I could barely taste the mango. My opinion.... Meh. I wouldn't go out of my way to have one. It just wasn't amazing.

TOG is pushing me to get my butt moving. Off to see if I can get my foot in a shoe! Woot!

Have an amazing day! Asthmagirl out!

Food Porn Plus....

It seems like forever since I've done any food porn! I can't believe I'm so out of practice! TOG and I were sitting at the pub last night and I was in the mood for some Nachos! I've been eating the heck out of them these last few months... Khava told me that the chili was You'll-regret-it-tomorrow Buffalo chili and that I'd regret eating it. Since I plan on hiking today, I didn't want the chili coming back in any manner, so I quickly opted out of the nachos. It totally threw off my groove though....now what? Khava said they didn't have turkey burgers this month so i couldn't go that route either.... I settled on this beast:

Stout burger

It's the No-Doubt-Stout burger, complete with bacon and swiss! And even potato ho's need a break... I veered off the planet with these Sweet Potato fries! So good with the stout bbq! Their No-Doubt-Stout is so smoky and smooth... it makes a great bbq sauce! This burger was the bomb! And the fries were to die for! They also use their stout ale to make their sauce for pulled pork sandwiches (which are awesome with their cilantro slaw stuffed right in the bun with the pork!)

Okay, back to Victoria. There's this pub up there that makes possibly the best salmon cakes in the world. I think I've talked about them before, if not, I should have. They are amazing. They come with sauteed greens and lay in the tiniest pool of stout malt vinegar. OMG. I couldn't stop myself from falling on them with lust in my heart and fork in my hand, but I want you to know that I stopped eating half way for you. Because I knew I could scarf through the rest of the order and have nothing to show you. So, here's half an order of the best salmon cakes in the world!

Salmon cakes

Drunk with Cider and fueled with salmon cakes, I made my way to the ladies room, camera in hand. Why? It's right next to the kitchen! I got this wonderful shot of fish and chips. And then the whole kitchen turned and looked at me like I was a paparazzi. I quickly went back to my table and put the camera away. TOG breathed a sigh of relief!

Fish and chips

That is all I have for you today for food porn! Back to the award,,,,

Fun to read1

I'm giving this award to:

David at Life in a cone of silence

Flea at Flea's world

Hen at Domestic Hiss

Tracey at Oliver Rain

Mama at MamaHut's House

There are so many other blogs that are just plain fun and I'm trusting these folks to pass the award on to those that make their day! Thanks again Snooty for thinking of me, I'll figure out how to get it on my sidebar, I promise!

Have a wonderful day.... we are off to hike!

Food Porn Friday

Yesterday was incredibly stressful... the server was down when I got to work in the morning. I had people standing in the hallway sipping coffee when I got there... "Hey. Server's down". So I'm moving briskly toward the modem and router closet and as I stand on the stool to check the signal, people are staring in the closet asking "is it fixed yet?" I try to be patient as I know how big an issue it is for people to be "down". So I give the standard "No, but I'm working on it". Determining the signal is fine, I climb down, grab the keys for the server closet room, and head down to see what's wrong. I just get the door open and start to log into the server when I get two people walking up to me asking "So what's wrong with the server? How long will it take to fix? I have an email that I have to send this morning." Deep breath...I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong folks and until I do, I don't know how long it will take to fix.

We were down for about an hour and by the end of the day, I think it was barely a blip on the screen, but in that time span of "the technology on my desk is useless without a signal" it really sends folks into a tail spin. It only happens a couple times a year, so I tend to forget how tense folks can get... including me!

Thus I was really looking forward to relaxing at the pub with TOG. We didn't stay too long last night and oddly, no one around us was eating so I only got shots of TOG's and my food.

Nacho1

My half order of nachos. The chili last night was chipotle barbecue chicken. YUM! My absolute favorite chili they make!

Nacho1 (2)

TOG's Chop Chop salad!

Fresh field greens tossed with herbed balsamic vinaigrette, kidney beans,Parmesan cheese, olives, Roma tomatoes, feta cheese and "Dan the Sausage Man's" summer sausage.
Served with warm pita bread.

Nacho1 (1)

It's his favorite salad!

What did you have for dinner last night?

Food Porn Friday

Actually Saturday morning.... but all food porn was shot Friday night!

So this is the food, the guy next to us ordered during happy hour. (Yes, Asthmagirl embarrasses TOG by asking fellow pub dwellers if she can "shoot their food")

DSC_0157

These are their Pork Quesadillas, available ONLY during happy hour. I've had them before and that sauce on there... that's hot!

Here's my dinner! This is the half order of Nachos. The nachos vary day to day depending on the chili they've got going on... I love that! This batch was made with their steak and black bean chili, which was comfortably hot. The steak was muy tender. I have them hold the jalapeno and get an extra sour cream to hold the heat at bay!

DSC_0158

TOG ate my tomatoes and all the spicy guac!

Here's TOG's dinner.... Salmon and Clam Bisque with his favorite... Hoppin' Hummus~

DSC_0161

Then I asked Micheal if I could shoot some of the food porn coming out of the kitchen. Was I excited when he said yes! I bring you:

DSC_0162

AHI TACOS
Southwest seasoned ahi tuna flash seared to medium rare, laid over a bed of fresh citrus cilantro slaw, and wrapped in gordito shells. Served with our house-made pico de gallo, chipotle aioli, and seasoned fries.

LUNA WEIZEN FISH & CHIPS (and the very agreeable cooks in the kitchen!)
Half-pound of Alaskan cod fillets dipped in our house tempura batter made with Highline I.P.A. and seasoned with garlic, oregano, and basil. Served with lemon, tartar sauce, fresh citrus cilantro slaw, and seasoned fries.

Food Porn and Camera Snob

So I'm driving home from work last night, and I'm almost home when I realize that my camera is not in the car with me. All the air whooshed out of my body until I figured out that I'd left it in my office... securely locked up. I'd been out taking pictures of one of the crews yesterday morning (talk about fun!) and I'd brought the camera into my office to download the photos (which I did NOT do). I left in tucked in next to my CPU which would be behind me as I stood to leave. I work far enough away that's it's just not important enough (at this point) to go back to get it.

So last night I had to bust out my old camera. It's one undeniable virtue at this point being that it's considerably smaller than the Nikon. It took me a while to remember how to use it, find batteries that were charged and realize there were pictures on the memory card! It's funny though, I remember when that camera was like a third hand and now it's "lame". I remember when TOG gave me the Nikon and I thought I'd never figure out how to use it and kept sneaking back to my little Olympus because it was "comfortable"! How that changes in just a few months!

Thus when I took the pictures at the pub last night I was already having issues with the "little camera". When I downloaded the memory card this morning and realized that they were badly over exposed because the flash is set at the factory to "Nuclear Mushroom Cloud", I realized that my next decision was whether I cared enough to open Photoshop and fix them correctly or whether I would use my old photo manipulation program because I'm feeling lazy (Certainly too lazy to drive back to work and get the Nikon!). What do you think???

My dinner, the plain jane. (voted the best pub burger in West Seattle) I was going to go for the nachos, but Khava said the chili was 4.5 out of 5 stars hot, and she didn't feel like scraping me off the floor. I've learned to listen to Khava when she says it's too hot for me. (their herbed rosemary fries are AWESOME)

Plain_jane

TOG's dinner (what a good boy!) House-made tahini and garlic hummus folded with black beans.
Served with kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, cucumbers, and warm pita.

Hummus

He spikes it with extra Feta cheese and cucumber sauce... and he was kind enough to eat my tomato so I don't have to look at it too long!

Although there was discussion at the pub last night regarding hiking... I have the feeling we're working in the yard today. Fun! (it might be for the best, because if we hike, then I really need to go get my camera!)

Food Porn and Virtual Potluck

Today it's all food, all the time!

First of all, TOG and I had our weekly at the Pub last night. They have a new specials menu, which they do monthly. I came THIS CLOSE to having the Monte Christo sandwich... but Khava (on the right)

Annie_and_khava

kept saying how it was a heart attack on a plate. I was trying to get a shot of it, but the prep area was really busy last night and it wasn't a good idea. Here's what I settled on....

Dsc_0154

I did not eat the cilantro slaw, I only like it on the stout pulled pork sandwich. I did eat the sweet potato fries and stout sauced ribs though! And the beans were to die for! On the left, you see my cider, to the right is TOG's ale... Unintention-ale. Apparently they didn't mean to make it, but TOG thought it was excellent! Here's what TOG had:

Jerk_chick_salad

I hear it was spicy! Jerked Chicken Salad with jalapeno cornbread croutons. And, that's not cheese shaved on there, it's coconut! TOG said other than the avocado, there wasn't a cool place in the salad!

It's also ECM's virtual potluck today! I'm so excited! I've really dithered about what to bring this week. Because it's been so hectic the last few days, I didn't research something new and exciting, so I'm falling back on my tried and true stuff. Being proficient at soups, I thought I'd whip another batch of my infamous corn chowder. However, it's probably nicer weather down at ECM's and soup might be a little heavy on a warm day. I thought I'd better stick to something a little more summer-y... My fabulous tarragon potato salad!

Final

Yum! This will go with anything! burgers, bbq chicken, pulled pork, ribs! I'm getting hungry already! I hope we're grillin'!

Time to get dressed and hit the road for ECM's house. I'd like to request some Brian Setzer tunes for a fun weekend get-together and I'm really looking forward to having several one of Noble Pig's cocktails! And MPM brought the most adorable cocktail napkins! You can check out all the great food and beverages at Evil Chef Mom's site. She'll have all the links! You're gonna be there, right?

Happy Saturday! Asthmagirl out!

Pizza

I spent most of the day dealing with selling K2's older Honda. Pick up car, try to get battery replaced, go home to get right tools, back to auto parts, remove battery, get battery tested, watch battery fail, install new battery in parking lot, shuttle car back to the house. Wash hands. Shuttle car back to meeting place... sell car. I'm exhausted. But I've showered and am perky (finally). I was kind of a crab pot during this process, which K2 no doubt appreciated!

Since she made a little money on the sale of (my) the old car, I offered to let her buy dinner. We're having pizza! We did the online order with Dominos (not our first choice) but it's cool to watch the tracker and see where in the process your pizza is!

I'm finishing the other recipe and should have it up tonight... after I eat!

Hope everyone is having a Dandy Sunday!

Goodbye little Honda!! I'll miss you.

The kitchen goddess

Let's be honest... I'm really no more than functional in the kitchen. I can think of three people right off the top that are better in the kitchen than me (evil chef mom, noble pig and snooty primadona come to mind). I only know that because they've posted pictures of their glorious efforts and folks....I'm not there yet. 25 years of production dinners and I'm just now discovering things I like to cook. Not that I'm not good at it... but I haven't been perfecting my craft for 25 years, I've been cooking chickens in the crock pot and steaming broccoli. Hardly earth shattering. How ironic that I made the cooking website... I should have just called it comfort food galore!

Along the way, I've also made some whopping errors... otherwise known as being bit in the butt by the kitchen goddess. This odds of this bite happening are usually directly proportionate to the number of people available to witness the tragedy. Holidays are prime targets as is my dad! But that's because I started early...

  • Like the first cake I made and I decided to make boxed frosting (back in the day). I got it too wet because I wanted to make sure I could spread it. To thicken it, I added flour. My dad suggested that I stick with peanut butter for a year or two until I got the hang of spreading things.
  • Which brought on the peanut butter cookies I made when I forgot to add sugar. My dad kept saying "there's something wrong with these... what the !#&*% did you do?"

My poor dad, he's been the recipient of some dreadful attempts on my part.

  • Like the time I made orange chicken in the crock pot. One word. Don't. It was so far beyond dreadful. I believe my husbands words were, "you picked a dinner with your folks to make the worst meal you've ever produced? why don't you do things like that when there's no one else around to witness it?"

Following that are the holiday events... very mundane, turkeys that didn't get done on time, hams that were cold in the middle. I swear I followed directions. I have no idea why I'm so capable at this now and 10 years ago it was hit and miss! Back to my dad....

We lived in a rental house that had an odd sized oven from which the previous renters had stolen the oven rack. I'd looked everywhere for a new one. I finally took my cooling racks and criss crossed them in the oven as a shelf and baked cookies. Worked great. So I invited my parents over for dinner and decided to make a pineapple upside down cake which my dad loves. You guessed it, that cake was a little heavier than the cookies, causing my little design to give way and I ended up scraping cake batter and pineapple off the inside of the oven.

At our last house, we remodeled the kitchen when we moved in, but we didn't add additional electricity. The kitchen only had two outlets. Which meant you were constantly juggling appliances and cords to plug things in. One outlet had the phone and the coffee maker. That left the outlet behind the cooktop (yup... you see it coming, don't you?) for everything else. I wasn't watching one day when I was setting up to make mashed potatoes. This is what the cord to my kitchen aid stand mixer has looked like ever since.

Cord

Yes, and that's my hair too which is always in the way of everything! Burned the cord up nicely, but it still works 6 years later!

This last one is one I'm happy that I don't have a picture of. Thanksgiving blueberry pie debacle. I had blueberry plants at the last house and they were loaded. TOG loves blueberry pie, so I made one. It came out of the oven looking beautiful! I set it on the back burner because I was out of counter space (this was a small kitchen) and was finishing dinner. I turned on the broccoli to steam and was mashing potatoes when the pie exploded. Glass pie pan, hot burner... the kitchen goddess turned on the wrong burner. I've got a turkey ready to carve, sweet potatoes to tend to and a steaming hot blueberry/glass splinter mess oozing down my walls and cupboards, into the bottom of my cook top. Glass and blueberries in the mashed potatoes, the gravy... and from the front room I hear... "what the hell did you do?" At that moment, I wanted to do murder!

See, I'm reliving the whole thing right now! I think it's true, that no matter how proficient we become, the kitchen goddess occasionally rises up and smacks us down, publicly! I try to carry a seed of humility, but sometimes I forget and suffer the consequences... like the half hour cookies that never got beyond dough in the Behemoth's predecessor. Waste of cookie dough! I did it two nights in a row, because the first one wasn't enough evidence!

Has the kitchen goddess ever visited you? Is there a blueberry pie episode in your past? Do tell!

Earth Day

In honor of earth day... I'm celebrating one of my favorite businesses and one of the greenest, tastiest places I know of... Elliott Bay Brew Pub. Let me count the ways they are green....

  • They participate in Puget Sound Energy's Green Power program and purchase approximately 60% of their electricity from wind power sources.
  • They've worked with the city utility to replace (where possible) most of their old lights with the latest generation of energy efficient florescents, saving a heap of electricity over the course of the year while also providing better light.
  • They've been selected to be among the first restaurants in Seattle to take part in recycling all of their food waste instead of sending it to the landfill.
  • They've replaced the company vehicle with a diesel truck that runs on biodiesel
  • They use only certified organic pale malt as the base malt in all its regular house beers.
  • All their burgers are organic Black Angus beef raised on Vashon Island.
  • Spent grain from the brewing process is used to make their burger buns.
  • They serve organic Fair Trade coffee.
  • They monitor napkin usage and additional napkins are available on request. They've gone from bleached napkins to 100% post consumer recycled napkins.
  • They recycle all their fry oil to the biodiesel place for fuel

If their food was dreadful, I'd still support them, but the food is awesome. Their spicy lambchop on lime taboulah with peach ketchup was a winner. Their open faced turkey burger (organic) at the holidays....mmmm... served on dressing instead of bun with a cranberry compote and sweet potato fries! Yum. Their No-Doubt-Stout pulled pork sandwich on spent grain bun is to-die-for especially if you slip some cilantro slaw in on top of it. Their pale ale chicken pie.... the no-doubt-stout ice cream... the list goes on and on! Their turkey burger with swiss, bacon and spicy guac is yummy!

Anyway, I'll finish this off with a more global view, from someone far more informed than I. Visit Amy today for more info on earth day! Have an awesome Tuesday!
