Through the eyes of The Engineer

This is The Engineer. Many of my long time readers will know him as TOG, The Old Goat. The Engineer is the love of my life, father of K1 through K3 and has more chest hair than any other man on the planet. While no scientific studies have been done in support of this claim, I stand by it, whole heartedly and unreservedly. The standing joke for K1 through K3 is to see their dad without a shirt and utter the comment "Nice sweater, Dad!" Bah dum bum! Get's 'em every time.

Other little known facts about The Engineer are the things he sees on his job. Things like this:

Or this...

Is it any wonder when The Engineer said "come see what I see at work" that I dilly dallyed? While the Engineer in TOG thrills to the sight of conduit in a parking garage or roof-top cooling units or hospital beds (he knows the model numbers, lifespan and everything), these are not the things that make Asthmagirl's goofy heart beat faster. No, it's not the chest hair either, that's just a bonus!

These are the things the Engineer knew I would want to see...

Puget sound with Maury Island jutting out in the middle...

And of course... my favorite subject!

So thanks TOG/Engineering dude! I'm saying this publically so there's no denying it...

You were right!

AG out!

PS ~ This is not a solicitation for you to send me pictoral proof of men with chest hair. Seriously. If I want to see that, I'll look at TOG!

Namaste!

Up on the Roof - Part Deux

One of the benefits (among many!) of being married to an engineer is that occasionally, very occasionally you get to go up on the roof of the hospital.... where you see things from a whole new perspective!

Last night, TOG took me up on the roof to capture the moon rise. It was an opportunity not to be missed!

While on the roof with my camera, tripod and engineer, I took the opportunity to shoot one of my favorite subjects, Mt. Rainier. And yes, that's a plane flying in front of it. The hospital is quite near the airport. So while I waited for moonrise, I took shots like this:

The mountains in the background are the cascades, where Rainier, Adams, Baker and St Helens all hang out!

I'm still working on the moon shots. They're amazing!

Stay tuned!

PS ~ Yes, I have more BlogFest shots to share as well! I'm drowning in shots that need editing!

Saying Goodbye

TOG's stepdad passed away very suddenly last night.

He was a part of our lives for many years and his very best quality in my eyes.... He was wonderful to TOG's mother. Widow and Widower, both of them found in their second marriage the things they had missed out on in their first.

Rest in peace, Grandpa. You did good.

Hug those you love close to you,

Blessings to all,

AG

From Alaska

TOG took the D80 up to Alaska on his fishing trip last week. He came back with mostly good shots. The learning curve on the D80 meant that some of the shots just weren't quite in focus... which is unfortunate because I think he has a real eye.

So I snuck into my old camera case and downloaded a few shots! Wanna see?

This first shot is Ketchikan at night. Or early in the morning. Or dusk. Not sure. But I'm impressed because he didn't take the tripod and I've had no end of issues shooting lights at night without picking up vibration...

Next we have a shot of this eagle. TOG had caught a small fish and returned it to the sea to live. It wasn't doing well, and was kind of swishing on the surface. It caught the eye of this eagle who did... well... did what eagles do... I think this is the best shot TOG took.

Moving on... here's the obvious shot of TOG holding one of his many salmon. It's a lovely fish. Would you like to know a secret? He tastes good too. I had a little chunk last night and he was delightful!

Finally... TOG took this shot just for me. Because he knew it would set me off.

As a dedicated fan of Deadliest Catch, and a former resident of Alaska, I know where the Bering Sea is. It is NOT near Ketchikan. So these folks are obviously luring the tourists off the cruise ships for....

...their official "Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour"... In Ketchikan. I don't know what part of the Bering Sea they're going to be shown on an excursion from Ketchikan... and yes, TOG was right. I'm outraged.

Thanks Honey.... for letting me show off your shots! Even though I didn't ask. I'm sure if I had, you would have said yes. Right? Honey? Sweetheart?

Asthmagirl out!

Learning

Saturday, before he left for his evening shift, TOG and I went down to the waterfront for a lesson on how to use the D80. It really made me remember how uncomfortable I was with the camera when I first got it. While I'm far from an expert now, I've reached a point where I feel like I take reasonably good shots. And knowing that my technical expertise is limited, I've learned to compensate with things like composition and lighting and a gentle hand with photoshop. So I knew how overwhelmed TOG was feeling with even the basic controls. And yeah... the D90 is going to challenge me all over again.

Here's some of the shots we took together.... These are off the D90. I haven't seen his.

Outdoors with the sun at your back.

This shot was a lesson in focal length and bokeh!

Here's our salmon friend demonstrating too much shadow. The quartermasters office was behind us and blocking the light at the ground level, making our fish buddy too dark to see his details.

Here's my favorite:

I love shooting reflections on the water!

In the next few days, I'll show you something unexpected that happened to us while we were down at the pier! And maybe I'll show you the surprise that the girls and are working on for TOG! (if we get it done...)

Have a wonderful day!
