I was offered the opportunity to review this book through Business2Bloggers.
Honestly? I begged for the opportunity to review the book for a couple of reasons... number one, I love food, and number two, I love getting the behind the scenes look at anything. Perhaps one of the reasons I'm a fan of Alton Brown!
I didn't know when I got the book that I'd encounter so many reading obstacles (life upheavals). Usually when I read a book, I churn my way through it within a day or two. With this book, I had to really plan my reading moments. And I liked the book so much, I wouldn't pick it up unless I knew I was going to have at least a half hour of 'uninterupted' reading time! The book was very difficult to put down once I started reading and five minutes just didn't satisfy!
I should also point out that I am a total fiction kind of a girl. I wasn't sure how engaging a non fiction book would be even if it was about food! No worries! This book has plenty of engaging moments and the author carries the story forward at an even pace and keeps you turning the page. Her ability to weave the famous names into the story is a nice touch.
The thing I loved most about the book was the honesty. The author talks just as openly and honestly about kitchen hiarchy, politics and injuries as she does about the food (OMG! The Food!). I think the most unexpected aspect of the book was the underlying sexism that occured in some of the restaurants she worked at. Yet it was clear throughout the book that the author continued to love the work and took something away from each position she embarked on.
The one thing I would change about the book? Recipes! Hints! Tips! You know she has to be amazing at what she does, but when you finish the book, you are inspired but have no additional skills. You're still the same cook you were when you started the book!
I'm very grateful that I got an opportunity to review the book and highly recommend it. So highly that I'm giving away a copy! Simply leave a comment telling me what your favorite thing to cook is... I'll have K3 pick a winner which will be announced on Monday. Deadline for leaving comments is Friday at Midnight!
PS~ A special thanks to Megan at Penguin Group for allowing me to review!
