Gimmee Shelter
Monday, October 18, 2010 at 6:53AM
A couple of weeks ago I went to see some family in Oregon. I drove through this small town and fell in love with their city hall.
Clearly from another era, this building took me back to the time where I wore plaid dresses with white collars, cable knit tights, Mary Janes and had my hair in braids.
And this was the culprit...

You just don't see the Fallout Shelter sign much anymore. Certainly not on a main highway through small town USA!
Nostalgia!
What takes you back in time?

Oh the memories .. the emergency drills .. hiding under our desks or out in the hallway lined up against the wall so as not to be hurt by atomic blasts ...

Wood floors in Mom-and-Pop small-town markets like one I visited this past weekend. They remind me of the wood floors and twirling stools at the counter of the soda fountain in my hometown drugstore, long before Walgreen's came to town and penny candies really were a penny.
Wow! I haven't seen one of those signs in many years, but I do remember the drills during grade school... at every single school I went to (and there were many). We basically had the same drills for tornadoes.
Frankly, these days, every time I find a mom & pop store, I tumble back through time. There are so few. I'd actually have to think hard to come up with something else. Oh. Wait. Every time I see saddle oxfords, I do a bit of a tumble. Reminds me of Catholic boarding school...
